Lousy Karaoke Inspires Violence in Connecticut

Hat Tip To: The Rap Up

singing bad karaoke = an ass whooping
When I first saw this story it seemed so outrageous that I did a double take to make sure I wasn’t reading The Onion.
Six women were arrested last night after they allegedly assaulted a female karaoke singer whose performance they panned. The attack occurred at a bar in Stamford, Connecticut, where Leidy Alcantara, 25, had performed a song by Juanes, the chart-topping Colombian singer. According to a police press release, the six arrestees made “derogatory comments about the other female’s singing ability (or lack thereof) and then repeatedly punched, kicked and pulled the hair of the victim before leaving the bar.” Alcantara, who suffered a chipped tooth and was left with numerous bruises, was treated at a local hospital.
Apparently, beating the living stars out of lousy singers is common practice at karaoke bars.
Last night’s karaoke attack was the third in the past couple of years. A Seattle man was throttled in August 2007 after performing a Coldplay song, while a Wisconsin man was attacked last November following his interpretation of a Ronnie James Dio song.
The moral of the story is this: Just because you can sing a Juanes karaoke song doesn’t mean that everyone there is willing to endure the noises a drunk trying to read lyrics through blurred eyes makes. Pop the hood for full mugshots of all 6 assailants.

WTF: 75 Percent of Oklahoma High School Students Can't Name the First President of the U.S.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Only one in four Oklahoma public high school students can name the first President of the United States, according to a survey released today.

The survey was commissioned by the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs in observance of Constitution Day on Thursday.

Brandon Dutcher is with the conservative think tank and said the group wanted to find out how much civic knowledge Oklahoma high school students know.

The Oklahoma City-based think tank enlisted national research firm, Strategic Vision, to access students' basic civic knowledge.

"They're questions taken from the actual exam that you have to take to become a U.S. citizen," Dutcher said.
A thousand students were given 10 questions drawn from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services item bank. Candidates for U.S. citizenship must answer six questions correctly in order to become citizens.

About 92 percent of the people who take the citizenship test pass on their first try, according to immigration service data. However, Oklahoma students did not fare as well. Only about 3 percent of the students surveyed would have passed the citizenship test.

Dutcher said this is not just a problem in Oklahoma. He said Arizona had similar results, which left him concerned for the entire country.

"Jefferson later said that a nation can't expect to be ignorant and free," Dutcher said. "It points to a real serious problem. We're not going to remain ignorant and free."

Mafia ‘was paid to sink ships carrying radioactive cargo’

Found in the London Times

About 30 ships containing radioactive and other poisonous refuse may have been scuttled off the Italian coast in an illegal Mafia operation to dispose of dangerous substances at sea.

Italy’s political opposition yesterday demanded an investigation after the wreck of a cargo vessel containing 120 barrels of potentially radioactive waste was found in waters off the southern province of Calabria. Environmental campaigners said that many more ships containing toxic and radioactive rubbish were believed to lie near by.

“Propaganda Techniques” is based upon “Appendix I: PSYOP Techniques” from “Psychological Operations Field Manual No.33-1″ published by Headquarters; Department of the Army, in Washington DC, on 31 August 1979

(from http://www.zoehouse.com/is/sco/proptech.html)
Knowledge of propaganda techniques is necessary to improve one’s own propaganda and to uncover enemy PSYOP stratagems. Techniques, however, are not substitutes for the procedures in PSYOP planning, development, or dissemination.

Techniques may be categorized as:
Characteristics of the content self-evident. additional information is required to recognize the characteristics of this type of propaganda. “Name calling” and the use of slogans are techniques of this nature.
Additional information required to be recognized. Additional information is required by the target or analyst for the use of this technique to be recognized. “Lying” is an example of this technique. The audience or analyst must have additional information in order to know whether a lie is being told.
